Andrew Ratner

Andrew Ratner is an Assistant Professor of Secondary Education, Deputy Dean, and Director of the English Education program at The City College of New York. Over his seventeen years at CCNY he has taught courses in Teaching of Writing, Teaching of Reading, Literacy Across the Curriculum, and Educational Research. His research interests include critical perspectives on literacy education, and issues in urban teaching and teacher preparation. He has also consulted and conducted teacher and teacher leader development for distinguished educational organizations including the Institute for Student Achievement, Teachers College Reading and Writing Project and the KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) network of charter schools. Prior to his career as a university professor and administrator, Andrew taught English and Civics grades 7-12, designed innovative curriculum, and spearheaded staff development for newly launched and established middle schools and high schools in New York City, Newark, New Jersey and New Orleans, Louisiana. Andrew currently leads a team at CCNY that is collaborating with the Stony Brook University Center for News Literacy to introduce a 6th to 8th grade news literacy curriculum into the New York City school system. The team is working with teachers and administrators at four NYC public middle schools to design and field test learning experiences that instill the lifelong skills, knowledge and habits of news literate citizens.​
